Eight days is enough time to see Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka properly — without feeling like you spent half your trip on trains. This itinerary gives each city enough time to feel real rather than just checked off. Transport between cities is efficient; the pacing allows for wandering.
Overview
- Days 1–3: Tokyo
- Day 4: Shinkansen to Kyoto (plus optional Nikko detour)
- Days 4–6: Kyoto (with Nara day trip)
- Days 7–8: Osaka
Days 1–2: Tokyo Core
Day 1: Arrival – Shinjuku & Shibuya
After arriving and checking in, head to Harajuku–Shibuya for an afternoon orientation. Walk the 800m between Harajuku Station (Takeshita Street for youth fashion, Omotesando for design and international brands) and Shibuya Scramble Crossing. The crossing is most dramatic at dusk when five crosswalks release simultaneously — hundreds of people cross from all directions. Dinner in Shibuya or Shinjuku, both lined with yakitori, ramen, and izakaya at every price point.
Day 2: East Tokyo – Senso-ji, Akihabara, Skytree
Start at Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, arriving by 8am to beat the crowds (the Nakamise market approach opens around 9–10am, but the temple complex is accessible earlier and far more atmospheric). Walk east toward Akihabara (30 min on foot or 5 min by metro) for electronics and anime. Late afternoon: Tokyo Skytree observation deck (book tickets in advance at tokyoskytree.jp; ¥2,100 for 350m floor, ¥3,100 for 450m).
Day 3: West Tokyo – Parks & Neighborhoods
Morning: Shinjuku Gyoen garden (¥500, exceptional in cherry blossom and autumn seasons, pleasant year-round). Walk south through Shinjuku's Golden Gai alley bar district (most bars open evening, but the alleyways are atmospheric by day). Afternoon: Shimokitazawa for vintage shops and live music venues, or Daikanyama and Nakameguro for design, canal walk, and Tsutaya Books.
Alternative for Day 3: teamLab digital art installation. Book 2+ weeks ahead at teamlab.art. A half-day that replaces a standard afternoon.
Day 4: Tokyo → Kyoto
Standard: Shinkansen from Tokyo Station. Nozomi: 2h15m, ¥13,910 reserved. Hikari (JR Pass): 2h40m. Arrive Kyoto early afternoon, check in. Evening: walk Gion district and Ninen-zaka/Sannen-zaka stone lanes — these are at their best after 6pm when tour buses have gone and the lanterns are lit.
With Nikko: Take an early morning side trip to Nikko (2h north of Tokyo by JR or Tobu line) for the elaborate Tosho-gu shrine complex, then catch an afternoon Shinkansen to Kyoto. Arrive later but the day trip is genuinely worth it.
Days 5–6: Kyoto
Day 5: South & East Kyoto
Very early morning (6–8am): Fushimi Inari. The 10,000 torii gate mountain path is the single most photographed sight in Japan, and at dawn you may have sections of it nearly to yourself. The hike to the first summit (Yotsutsuji, ~45 min up) gives you the views; the full 2–3 hour round trip rewards the commitment. Midday: Gion district and Kiyomizudera temple (¥500). Late afternoon: Philosopher's Path canal walk (2km north), Nanzen-ji Temple complex.
Day 6: Arashiyama + Nara Day Trip
Option A – Arashiyama: Bamboo grove (early morning for fewer crowds), Tenryu-ji garden and pond (¥500), boat hire on the Oi River, Okochi-sanso villa gardens (¥1,000). Western Kyoto at its most beautiful.
Option B – Nara day trip: 35–45 minutes from Kyoto by JR or Kintetsu Limited Express. See Todai-ji, the world's largest bronze Buddha (¥600), and the ~1,200 free-roaming deer of Nara Park, which will bow for senbei crackers (¥200/pack from vendors). Return to Kyoto for dinner.
Days 7–8: Osaka
Kyoto to Osaka: 15 min by Shinkansen (¥1,490), 28 min by Hankyu Kyoto Line (¥410), or 30 min by JR Special Rapid Service (¥580, JR Pass).
Day 7: Osaka Essentials
Dotonbori canal area for takoyaki, kushikatsu, and general food carnival atmosphere. Osaka Castle and grounds (free outer areas; ¥600 for the castle museum). Kuromon Market — two blocks of fresh food stalls where you eat as you walk. Evening in Shinsekai for old-school kushikatsu at the establishments that invented the dish.
Day 8: Day Trip or Departure
Hiroshima: Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, 1h15m (JR Pass eligible). Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Miyajima island and the floating torii gate. Emotionally significant, unforgettable day.
Kobe: 40 min by JR or Hankyu. Kitano foreign settlement area, Kobe beef lunch (¥3,000–5,000 for a proper portion at a dedicated restaurant), Nada sake district tour.
Easy day: Osaka Bay area (Kaiyukan Aquarium ¥2,400, Tempozan), then airport transit.
