April is Japan's most iconic travel month — cherry blossom season peaks, the weather is perfect, and the country looks at its most beautiful. It's also Japan's most crowded and expensive travel period. Here's how to experience it well.
Cherry Blossom Timing in April
The bloom moves north through April: Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka: Peak late March to early April (approx. April 1–10 in most years). Tohoku (Sendai, Hirosaki): Late April (April 15–30). Hokkaido (Sapporo, Hakodate): Late April to early May. If you arrive in Tokyo on April 10, cherry blossoms may already be falling — plan for early April for central Honshu, or late April for northern Japan.

Golden Week in April (Late April)
Golden Week begins April 29 (Showa Day) — Japan's busiest holiday. Everything books out: shinkansen, popular ryokan, theme parks. If visiting in late April, book 3–4 months ahead. Consider which of these appeals: joining the festive holiday energy (festivals everywhere, park hanami) or avoiding it (go earlier in April when prices are still high but crowds are slightly smaller).

April is among Japan's finest weather months: Tokyo 15–20°C, Kyoto similar. Rain is possible (spring rain) but not overwhelming. No humidity yet. Light jacket for evenings. Perfect walking weather for temple hopping and cherry blossom picnics.
