Asahikawa sits at Hokkaido's geographic center, where the Tokachi and Ishikari rivers meet — a natural junction that made it a trading hub and now makes it an ideal base for exploring Hokkaido's wild interior.

Asahiyama Zoo

Asahiyama Zoo was on the verge of closure in 1996 before it reinvented itself with a radical approach: instead of displaying animals in conventional enclosures, it built habitats showcasing each animal's natural behaviors. Polar bears swim in underwater viewing tunnels; penguins parade through a winter walkway at eye level; orangutans traverse sky bridges overhead. The zoo became Japan's most visited outside Tokyo, drawing 3 million annual visitors to a city of 340,000. Winter visits (penguins in snow, polar bears playing) are particularly spectacular.

Asahikawa Ramen

Asahikawa has its own distinct ramen style — clear shoyu (soy sauce) broth made from pork and chicken stock with dried seafood, topped with a thin layer of lard that prevents the soup from cooling in Hokkaido's extreme winters. The noodles are medium-thickness wavy. Aoba near the station is the most historic shop (1947). Hachiya is rated Japan's best ramen by some publications — extremely rich shoyu broth with house-made wavy noodles.

Daisetsuzan National Park

Japan's largest national park begins 30 minutes from Asahikawa city. Daisetsuzan (大雪山) — "Great Snowy Mountains" — contains Japan's highest peak outside Honshu (Asahi-dake, 2,291m) and dramatic volcanic landscapes. The Sounkyo Gorge (accessible by bus from Asahikawa) cuts through 24km of basalt columns with waterfalls and two famous gorge viewpoints. In winter, Sounkyo's ice waterfall festival illuminates the frozen falls.

Craft Beer

Otokoyama sake brewery has produced one of Japan's most recognized sake brands since 1665; their Asahikawa brewery offers tours and tastings. Kamui Beer, a craft brewery using Hokkaido hops and water, represents the newer brewing culture in the city.

Getting There

Asahikawa airport connects to Tokyo Haneda (1.5 hours). From Sapporo, the Kamui/Lilac limited express takes about 1.5 hours (JR Pass eligible). Asahikawa is a logical midpoint on a Hokkaido road trip combining Sapporo, Furano/Biei flower fields, Asahikawa, and Shiretoko.
