Japan has exceptional hiking — ancient pilgrimage routes, volcanic peaks, alpine ridgelines, and forested valleys. Most visitors only know Mt. Fuji, but Japan's mountain culture runs far deeper. Here's where to go and what to know.

Best Multi-Day Trails

Kumano Kodo (Wakayama/Mie): Ancient pilgrimage network through sacred mountains. The Nakahechi route (3–5 days) connects Takijiri-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Forested, atmospheric, well-marked. Luggage forwarding services available. Nakasendo Trail (Nagano/Gifu): Historic feudal-era road linking Kyoto to Tokyo. The 8 km Magome-to-Tsumago section is the most popular — forested, well-preserved post towns, doable in 2–3 hours. Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage: 1,200 km around Shikoku Island following the path of Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi — completed in 30–60 days. Sections can be hiked independently.

Day Hikes Near Major Cities

Near Tokyo: Takao-san (Mt. Takao, 599m) — 90 min from Shinjuku, family-friendly, temple at the summit. Tanzawa mountains for more challenging terrain. Near Kyoto: Kurama and Kibune — forest trail connecting two ancient villages (8 km, 3 hrs). Fushimi Inari summit hike (4 km loop, 2–3 hrs). Near Osaka: Minoh Falls trail — forested gorge with waterfall (4 km return). Hokkaido: Daisetsuzan (Great Mountain Range) — Japan's largest national park, volcanic peaks, alpine flowers in July–August.

Mt. Fuji

Japan's highest peak (3,776m) is open for climbing July–early September. The Yoshida Trail from the 5th Station takes 5–8 hrs up and 3–5 hrs down. Altitude sickness is real — spend time at the 5th station (2,300m) before ascending. Huts provide food and sleeping space (book months ahead for peak August). The best experience: leave 10 PM, hike through the night, summit for sunrise.

Practical Tips

Japanese trail maps use the 1:25,000 Geographical Survey Institute format — available at hiking shops and online. The Yamap app (Japanese GPS topo maps, offline capability) is essential. Mountain huts (yamagoya) provide accommodation at ¥8,000–¥12,000 per night including dinner/breakfast. Register with the mountain climbing registration system (tozan todoke) for serious peaks — boxes at trailheads.
