November is arguably Japan's finest month for travel. Autumn foliage (koyo) peaks across the country, temperatures are crisp and comfortable, and the summer and shoulder-season crowds have thinned. It's the month when Japan looks most like the photographs that made you want to visit.

Autumn Foliage Peak Timing

The koyo front moves from north to south, roughly 3–4 weeks behind the cherry blossom front in spring. Approximate peak times:

  • Early November: Hokkaido (already peaking or past), Tohoku, Nikko
  • Mid-November: Kyoto (Eikan-do, Tofuku-ji), Nara, Japanese Alps
  • Late November: Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyushu lowlands, Tokyo suburban temples
  • December 1–15: Tokyo's final spots (Shinjuku Gyoen), southern Kyushu

The exact timing varies by 1–3 weeks annually based on summer heat and autumn temperature drop. Check the Japan Meteorological Corporation's koyo forecast (released in September) for the year's specific predictions.

Best Autumn Foliage Spots in November

Kyoto (mid-November): Eikan-do (Zenrin-ji) Temple's maple-covered hillside is Japan's single most visited autumn foliage spot — arrive before 8am. Tofuku-ji's Tsutenkyo bridge, surrounded by thousands of maples, is the most dramatic composition. Arashiyama's bamboo grove alongside Jojakkoji Temple's maple forest creates a unique layered landscape.

Nikko (early November): The cedar-lined approach to Toshogu, the waterfalls, and Lake Chuzenji become extraordinary when maples and larches turn gold and red around them.

Japanese Alps (early November): Kamikochi closes November 15 for winter — visit before then for peak color against the Northern Alps backdrop. Kurobe Gorge's narrow-gauge railway (running until November) passes through autumn forest hanging over waterfalls.

Weather in November

Tokyo: High 16°C (61°F), Low 9°C (48°F). Kyoto: slightly cooler, possibility of first cold snap. Hokkaido: 2–8°C, possible first snow in Sapporo. Pack layers — mornings are cold in mountain areas. Rain is less common than spring or summer but not rare. A light waterproof layer is essential.

Events in November

Shichi-Go-San (November 15): Children aged 3, 5, and 7 visit shrines dressed in formal kimono. Meiji Jingu and Fushimi Inari see large numbers of beautifully dressed families — excellent photography opportunities if approached respectfully.

Tori-no-Ichi (Rooster Fair): Markets at Asakusa Otori Shrine sell kumade (bamboo rakes for good fortune) on the Day of the Rooster in November. One of Tokyo's most vivid traditional market experiences.

Should You Go to Kyoto in November?

Yes, but book accommodation 3–6 months ahead. Mid-November Kyoto accommodation books out faster than Golden Week. The foliage is extraordinary — Eikan-do's autumn special viewing (the temple stays open until 9pm for night illumination) is one of Japan's great seasonal events. The crowds are real but manageable before 9am and after 5pm.
