The JR Pass allows unlimited rides on most JR trains in Japan — including the Shinkansen — for a fixed price. After a significant price increase in 2023, it's no longer automatically a good deal. Here's how to calculate whether you need one.
2025 JR Pass Prices
7-day Ordinary Pass: ¥50,000 (~$330 USD). 14-day Ordinary Pass: ¥80,000. 21-day Ordinary Pass: ¥100,000. Green (first class) passes cost approximately 30% more. Prices increased 70% in October 2023 — many travelers who previously "always" bought one now skip it.
What the JR Pass Covers
Included: All JR Shinkansen except Nozomi and Mizuho (the fastest trains on the Tokaido/Sanyo line) · JR local and express trains nationwide · JR Buses (some routes) · JR Ferry to Miyajima. Not included: Nozomi/Mizuho Shinkansen · Most private railways (Hankyu, Kintetsu, Tokyu, Keikyu) · Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway · IC card purchases.
When the JR Pass Is Worth It
Calculate your planned shinkansen and JR train trips individually and compare. The pass typically pays off if you're doing: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → return (¥45,000+ in individual tickets for the Hikari route) · Tokyo + Kyoto + Hiroshima + Fukuoka in 7 days · Multi-city trip covering 3+ Shinkansen legs. Online calculator: Hyperdia.com lets you price individual journeys.
When the JR Pass Is NOT Worth It
For stays in one city · For Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka only (3-day Sanyo Mini Pass at ¥30,000 is often better) · For travelers using mostly private railways (Kintetsu for Kyoto–Nara–Osaka, Odakyu for Hakone) · For trips under 7 days with limited inter-city travel.
Where to Buy
Purchase online before arriving Japan (Klook, JR Pass official website, travel agencies) and pick up at major JR stations on arrival. Exchange offices: Narita, Haneda, Shin-Osaka, Kyoto, and 100+ JR stations. You must purchase outside Japan (or at specific overseas offices) — cannot be bought inside Japan.
Regional Passes
Often better value for focused trips: Kansai Wide Area Pass (¥12,000, 5 days) covers Kyoto–Osaka–Nara–Hiroshima. Tokyo Wide Pass (¥15,000, 3 days) covers Tokyo day trips to Nikko, Hakone, Kawaguchiko. Hokkaido Rail Pass (¥24,000, 5 days).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the JR Pass worth it?
The JR Pass is worth it if you're taking 3 or more long-distance Shinkansen journeys. A single Tokyo–Kyoto round trip (¥27,280) almost covers the 7-day pass cost of ¥50,000 when combined with other JR travel. If staying in one city, it's usually not worth it.
Can you use the JR Pass on the Nozomi Shinkansen?
No. The Nozomi (and Mizuho) Shinkansen are not covered by the JR Pass. You must use the Hikari or Kodama services, which are slightly slower but fully covered.
Where do I buy a JR Pass?
JR Passes must be purchased outside Japan before your trip, through authorized resellers or the JR website. Since October 2023, limited purchase is available in Japan but at a higher price.
How do I activate my JR Pass?
Exchange your voucher at any major JR ticket office (みどりの窓口) on arrival. Bring your passport. You choose your activation start date at this point.
