March is Japan's transition month — winter releasing its hold, the first cherry blossoms appearing in southern Kyushu by mid-month, and the country awakening into spring. It's one of the most exciting months to visit if you time it right.

March Weather

Early March: Still cold — Tokyo 8–12°C, Kyoto similar. Bring a proper coat. Mid-March: Warming noticeably. Tokyo 12–16°C, Osaka similar. Light jacket sufficient for midday. Late March: Cherry blossoms begin in Tokyo and Kyoto. 15–20°C daytime highs. Hokkaido: Still winter until late April — deep snow, excellent ski conditions.

Cherry Blossoms in March

The bloom wave begins in Kyushu and moves north: Fukuoka: Late March (around March 20–28). Hiroshima: Late March (around March 22–30). Osaka/Kyoto: Late March to early April (typically March 25–April 5 depending on the year). Tokyo: Late March to early April (typically March 23–April 1). For "early April" cherry blossoms without April crowds: visit Fukuoka or Hiroshima in late March — full bloom, fewer tourists, lower accommodation prices.

Plum Blossoms

Plum blossoms (ume) peak in February–early March — fragrant pink and white blossoms before the cherry trees even bud. Prime plum viewing: Yushima Tenmangu (Tokyo) · Kitano Tenmangu (Kyoto, famous Ume Festival on Feb 25) · Atami Plum Festival (Shizuoka, Jan–March) · Odawara Castle Park (Kanagawa).

March Events

Omizutori (Shunie) at Todaiji (Nara), early March: Ancient Buddhist purification ceremony with enormous torches — fire festival at night, one of Japan's oldest rituals (1,260 years). Osaka Grand Sumo Tournament: 15-day basho in Osaka, typically March 10–24. Hina Matsuri (Girl's Day, March 3): Traditional dolls displayed in households and public spaces — Katsuura (Chiba) and Motosu (Yamanashi) have elaborate displays.

Travel Tips for March

Book accommodation for late March (cherry blossom period) 3–6 months ahead in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka. Before mid-March, Japan is in shoulder season — fewer tourists, lower prices, manageable crowds at temples. University graduation ceremonies happen in late March — train stations near universities can be crowded with kimono-clad graduates for photogenic scenes.
