The samurai class was abolished in 1876 — but its culture persists in Japan through martial arts, museums, film, and preserved castle towns. For visitors interested in going beyond the surface, several experiences provide genuine contact with samurai history and practice.

Samurai Museums

Samurai Museum (Shinjuku, Tokyo): A private collection of armor, swords, and weapons — guided tours in English available. The highlight: try on authentic armor for photos (¥1,800 with tour). Tokugawa Art Museum (Nagoya): One of Japan's finest samurai collections — the actual belongings of the Tokugawa shogunate family, including swords, firearms, tea ceremony items, and the Tale of Genji picture scrolls. ¥1,400. Kochi Castle History Museum (Shikoku): Covers the Yamanouchi clan and local samurai history with excellent displays. Nagamachi Samurai District (Kanazawa): Preserved residential area with Nomura Samurai House open as a museum — the most authentic surviving samurai residence experience in Japan.

Sword Fighting (Kendo) Experiences

Several Tokyo studios offer tourist-oriented introduction sessions: Musoshindenryu Dojo (Tokyo): 90-minute introduction to Iaido (sword drawing) or Kendo. ¥6,000–¥10,000. English instruction. Shiseikan Martial Arts Hall (Meiji Jingu): Adjacent to Meiji Shrine — regular kendo, kyudo (archery), and iaido classes, some open to visitors. Kyoto Samurai & Ninja Experience: Tourist-oriented 60-minute session with kata (forms) and theatrical elements. ¥3,500–¥5,000.

Armor Wearing

Multiple studios in Kyoto, Asakusa (Tokyo), and Nikko offer samurai armor-wearing experiences — full sets of replica period armor fitted and photographed. Prices: ¥4,000–¥8,000 for a 30–45 minute session. The armor is the real weight (5–12kg) — genuine physical experience.

Castles with Strong Samurai Context

Himeji Castle: The finest surviving castle — the architecture, fortifications, and adjacent Kokoen Garden tell the full samurai story. Hikone Castle (Shiga): Well-preserved with an excellent samurai district around it — the Ii clan armor collection is one of Japan's finest. Matsumoto Castle (Nagano): The "Black Castle" — displays matchlock firearms and early gunpowder warfare that changed samurai tactics.

Bushido & Philosophy

For those interested in the philosophy beyond the weapons: Hagakure (the famous samurai text by Yamamoto Tsunetomo) is available in English translation. The concept of mushin (no-mind, focused presence) remains influential in modern Japanese business and martial arts. The Budokan (Tokyo) hosts major martial arts events — check schedules for kendo tournaments open to spectators.
