Japan rewards advance planning more than almost any travel destination. Popular ryokan, Shinkansen reserved seats during peak periods, and Michelin-starred restaurants require booking months ahead. Here's a complete timeline.
12+ Months Before
Flights: Book Japan flights 6–12 months ahead for the best prices, particularly for spring (cherry blossom, late March–early April) and autumn (October–November) peak season. JAL and ANA offer better service than budget carriers for the long-haul route; ANA in particular has consistent pricing dips during flash sales.
Top-tier ryokan: Tawaraya (Kyoto), Nishimuraya Honkan (Kinosaki), and Hakone Ginyu book out 6–12 months ahead during peak seasons. If these are on your list, this is when to book.
6 Months Before
Standard ryokan during peak season: Any quality ryokan in Kyoto for late March/early April or November. Hakone properties for cherry blossom and Golden Week. Sapporo accommodation for Snow Festival week (early February). Popular restaurants: Sushi omakase counters (Saito, Sushi Yoshitake, Harutaka) and kaiseki restaurants (Kichisen, Mizai) that require advance booking. Use Tableall, Omakase platform, or direct contact.
3–4 Months Before
JR Pass purchase: If you've calculated that you need one. The pass must be purchased before departure (now also available in Japan but at equivalent price). Golden Week accommodation: Book any accommodation for April 28–May 5 now — this is Japan's domestic travel peak and even mid-range hotels fill. DisneyLand/DisneySea tickets: Timed entry tickets open 3 months ahead and sell out for weekends during peak periods.
1–2 Months Before
Shinkansen reserved seats during peak: JR opens reservations 1 month before the travel date (to the day). Book reserved seats for Golden Week, Obon, and autumn peak Kyoto travel on the exact day they open. Regular accommodation: Business hotels and hostels outside peak periods. Cooking classes and experience bookings: Ramen-making, sushi, wagashi, tea ceremony, sake tasting. These sell out 2–4 weeks ahead for weekend dates.
2–4 Weeks Before
Mid-range restaurant reservations: Good izakaya with private rooms, popular ramen shops that take reservations (Fuunji, etc.), specialty restaurants. Day tours and guides: If using a local guide service, book 2–4 weeks ahead. Seasonal events: Guided cherry blossom tours, private tea ceremonies, sumo stable visits — these require 2–3 weeks notice minimum.
