Arashiyama is Kyoto's most scenic district — a mountain backdrop, the Oi River, a famous bamboo grove, and several significant temples clustered within walking distance. It's also one of Kyoto's most crowded areas; timing your visit correctly makes the difference between magical and miserable.
Getting to Arashiyama
From central Kyoto: Randen Tram (Arashiyama Line from Shijo-Omiya, 25 min, ¥250) — scenic, old-fashioned. JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama (15 min, ¥240, covered by JR Pass). Hankyu Railway to Arashiyama Station (20 min from Kawaramachi, ¥220). JR drops you closest to the bamboo grove; Hankyu is closest to the main shopping street and river.
The Bamboo Grove
The famous path through towering bamboo is Arashiyama's signature image. The path itself is about 400m long. Best time: Arrive before 8:00 AM — the light is beautiful and crowds are manageable. By 10:00 AM on weekends, it's shoulder-to-shoulder. The grove is open 24 hours and free.
Tenryuji Temple
UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple with a garden designed to use the Arashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery. The garden (¥500) is among Kyoto's finest. The main hall (¥300 extra) has ceiling paintings of a cloud dragon. Open 8:30–17:00. Get here early — it shares the entrance rush with the bamboo grove.
Oi River & Boat Rides
The Oi River runs through Arashiyama with forested mountains reflected in calm water. Options: Hozugawa River Boat Trip (2-hour river ride from Kameoka through rapids to Arashiyama, ¥4,100) — spectacular in autumn. Rental rowboats (¥1,500/30 min near Togetsu-kyo bridge) — peaceful.
Togetsu-kyo Bridge
The iconic wooden bridge spanning the Oi River is Arashiyama's other signature image — best photographed from the riverbank to the north in the early morning or late afternoon light.
Jojakko-ji & Nison-in
Walking north from the bamboo grove, two quieter temples reward those who continue past the crowds. Jojakko-ji (¥500) has a pagoda and autumn maples. Nison-in (¥500) has a long maple-lined approach. Both are excellent in November.
Arashiyama in Autumn
Mid-to-late November turns Arashiyama's forested mountains vivid red and orange — some of Kyoto's best koyo. The Hozugawa boat trip in this season is extraordinary. Weekends are brutally crowded; book accommodation in Arashiyama itself to enjoy mornings and evenings after the day-trippers leave.
