Kyoto is one of those cities where one day is not enough but one well-planned day is infinitely better than a rushed scramble through everything. This itinerary prioritizes quality over quantity — a small number of the best things done properly, rather than a checklist of 15 sites seen from a bus window.
6:30am — Fushimi Inari at Dawn
Start at Fushimi Inari Taisha before the crowds arrive. The first train from Kyoto Station reaches Inari Station by 6:15am; the shrine is a 3-minute walk from the station. The famous torii gate tunnels at this hour are nearly empty — you can photograph the iconic path without hundreds of other tourists in every shot. Walk the lower section (30–45 minutes), then return to the station by 7:30am.
Transport: JR Nara Line, Kyoto to Inari, 5 minutes, ¥150.
8:30am — Breakfast in Gion
Return toward central Kyoto and head to Gion — the historic entertainment district. Morning is the best time to walk Hanamikoji Street and the stone-paved lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka before the afternoon crowds. A traditional Japanese breakfast at one of the small cafes on Ninenzaka (tofu, rice, pickles, miso soup) sets the day appropriately. Budget ¥800–¥1,500.
10:00am — Kiyomizu-dera
A 10-minute walk uphill from Ninenzaka reaches Kiyomizu-dera — the hillside temple with a wooden stage extending over a forested valley. Entry ¥500. The view from the stage over the trees and the city beyond is worth the approach. The surrounding streets have ceramic shops, sweet shops, and traditional crafts — resist buying too much if you're carrying a pack all day.
12:00pm — Nishiki Market Lunch
Take a taxi or bus to Nishiki Market — a 400-metre covered shopping street called "Kyoto's Kitchen." Dozens of stalls selling pickled vegetables, tofu products, fish on skewers, sweet bean paste, and Kyoto specialties. Graze through the market for lunch rather than sitting down — this is one of the best ways to taste Kyoto food culture. Budget ¥1,000–¥1,500 for a grazing lunch.
1:30pm — Arashiyama
Bus or taxi west to Arashiyama (30 minutes). Visit the bamboo grove (walk through quickly — it's short), then Tenryu-ji garden (¥500, genuinely beautiful), and walk to Togetsukyo Bridge for the mountain view over the river. The afternoon light on the bridge and mountain is excellent for photography. If time allows, rent a small rowboat on the river (¥1,500/hour).
4:30pm — Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
Return east to Kinkaku-ji for late afternoon light on the gold-leaf pavilion. Entry ¥500. The late afternoon sun gives the gold a warmer tone than midday. Still crowded, but the view is worth it — the pavilion and its pond reflection is one of Japan's great images. Allow 45 minutes.
6:30pm — Gion Dinner
Return to Gion for dinner. The streets are beautiful in early evening when lanterns light the teahouse facades. For dinner: kaiseki-style restaurants at various price points, or more casual tofu-cuisine restaurants and izakaya. Budget ¥2,000–¥5,000 depending on choice.
Practical Notes
Use the IC card on buses (¥230 flat fare within the city) or taxis for speed. The Kyoto City Subway doesn't reach most of these locations — buses or taxis are necessary. Buy a day bus pass (¥700) if using buses repeatedly. Most major sites close at 5pm; the itinerary is timed to respect this. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — this is a 15,000+ step day.
