The reverse of the classic tourist route — Kyoto back to Tokyo for departure, or heading east after the Kansai leg of your trip. The same fundamental options apply but with some practical differences depending on which end of the journey you're optimizing.
Shinkansen (Most Popular)
Kyoto Station to Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station by Tokaido Shinkansen.
Hikari (JR Pass): 2h 15m–2h 30m. Fully covered by JR Pass. Departs every 20–30 minutes. Reserve seats at Kyoto Station JR ticket office or in advance online.
Nozomi (no JR Pass): 2h 8m–2h 15m. ¥13,850. Most frequent service. Not JR Pass eligible — you must pay separately even with a pass.
Seating note: Traveling eastbound (Kyoto to Tokyo), Mount Fuji views are on the LEFT side of the train (seats E/D) approximately 45 minutes before arriving at Shinagawa, near Shin-Fuji Station. Request left-side window seats.
Practical timing: An 8am or 9am shinkansen from Kyoto reaches Tokyo by mid-morning — time to check into your Tokyo hotel and still have a full afternoon. Last shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo runs around 9–10pm depending on the service.
Highway Bus
Kyoto → Tokyo direction has the same bus options as the reverse, departing from Kyoto Station's north bus terminal.
Daytime: 7–8 hours, ¥3,500–¥6,000. Useful if you want to sightsee along the route (some buses stop in Nagoya).
Overnight: Departing Kyoto around 10–11pm, arriving Tokyo (Shinjuku or Tokyo Station) around 6–7am. The most budget-efficient option — saves accommodation for one night.
Flight (from Osaka)
No airport in Kyoto — fly from Osaka Itami (75 minutes by bus from Kyoto Station) or Osaka Kansai International (90 minutes by train from Kyoto). The airport transport adds significantly to total journey time; shinkansen beats it door-to-door unless you find extremely cheap fares.
Which Option?
JR Pass + time matters: Hikari shinkansen — free, comfortable, beautiful journey.
Tight budget: Overnight bus from Kyoto Station — save a night's hotel cost.
No constraints: Nozomi shinkansen — ¥13,850 for 2h 15m, seats reserved, Fuji view.
Connection From Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station is the central hub for all transport options: JR shinkansen platforms, Kintetsu lines, subway connections, bus terminals, and taxi ranks are all within the station complex. Allow 15 minutes to navigate from hotel to platform if arriving by city transport.
