Matsumoto sits in a mountain basin in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the Japanese Alps on three sides. It has Japan's oldest surviving original castle tower, an exceptional soba culture, and serves as the departure point for Kamikochi — one of Japan's finest alpine landscapes. It deserves more time than most itineraries give it.

Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle (Crow Castle, from its black lacquered exterior) is one of Japan's 12 original surviving castle towers — built in 1504, never destroyed, never reconstructed. The interior retains 400-year-old wooden floors, steep narrow stairs between floors, and the original stone gun ports designed for early firearms. Entry ¥700; the 6-story climb to the top gives views across the Matsumoto Basin to the Northern Alps. The surrounding moat reflects the black tower in a mirror-perfect image most spectacular in cherry blossom season. Open 8:30am–5pm; arrive early to avoid queues for the narrow stairways.

The Nawate and Nakamachi Districts

Two preserved historic districts within walking distance of the castle. Nawate-dori: A riverside street of frog-themed shops (the area is famous for its frog iconography — frogs appear on every sign, shop, and decorative element because the Japanese word for frog (kaeru) also means "to return home safely"). Nakamachi: A Meiji-era merchant district with white kurazukuri storehouses converted to craft shops, cafés, and galleries. Both areas reward slow morning walks when locals are going about their business.

Matsumoto Soba

Matsumoto and the surrounding Nagano highlands are Japan's finest soba-growing region. The city has over 100 soba restaurants; the handmade (te-uchi) soba here — thin, slightly nutty, served cold with dipping broth — is considered among Japan's best. Look for restaurants that make their soba fresh daily (当日打ち, touji-uchi). Marumo and Kaneichi Shokudo are both well-reviewed specialists near the castle. Soba sets ¥900–1,400.

Gateway to Kamikochi

Matsumoto is the transit hub for Kamikochi — the mountain valley that many Japanese consider the country's most beautiful landscape. From Matsumoto Station: Matsumoto Electric Railway to Shin-Shimashima (30 min, ¥700), then bus to Kamikochi (50 min, ¥1,400). Total: 90 minutes and ¥2,100 from Matsumoto. Kamikochi is open May 15–November 15; the October foliage period (larches turning golden against granite peaks) is the most spectacular season.

Getting to Matsumoto

From Tokyo: JR Azusa limited express from Shinjuku (2h30m, ¥6,620 — JR Pass covered). From Nagoya: JR Shinonoi Line via Nagoya (2h, ¥3,740). From Osaka/Kyoto: change at Nagoya (3.5–4h total). Matsumoto is a natural stop on a Tokyo–Nagano–Kanazawa or Tokyo–Kyoto mountain route.
