Two hours from Tokyo, Minakami occupies the upper valley of the Tone River in Gunma prefecture — where the mountains begin to rise seriously toward Tanigawa-dake (one of Japan's deadliest mountains for climbing accidents, due to the extreme technical difficulty of its rock faces). But Minakami itself is accessible, dramatic, and packed with activities for every skill level.
White Water Rafting
Minakami is Japan's premier white water rafting destination. The Tone River runs through narrow gorges with rapids ranging from gentle Family Class 2 sections to challenging Class 4 rapids. Spring snowmelt (April–June) creates the strongest currents and most exciting conditions; summer (July–September) offers warmer water with reliable rapids. Multiple operators (Canyons Japan, Happy Raft) offer half-day trips (¥5,000–9,000 including equipment) in English. No experience needed for standard routes.
Bungee Jumping
Japan's first permanent bungee jumping site is at Minakami — a 42-meter jump over the Tone River gorge operated by Bungy Japan. The combination of mountain scenery and rushing water below creates a dramatic backdrop for what is undeniably a dramatic activity. Cost: ¥15,000–18,000 per jump.
Canyoning and Kayaking
Canyoning in Minakami means descending narrow mountain gorges with natural water slides, cliff jumps, and rope traverses through canyon pools. The Nana-kama River canyoning route near Minakami has become a signature experience in summer. Flatwater kayaking on Lake Fujihara and the upper Tone is available for more relaxed water experiences.
Tanigawa-dake Hiking and Skiing
Tanigawa-dake (1,977m) is reached by ropeway from Tenjindaira (30 minutes from Minakami). In summer, hiking trails above the ropeway provide panoramic views across the mountains toward Niigata. In winter, the Tenjindaira ski area offers powder snow conditions and challenging terrain. Minakami town also has several smaller ski resorts suited to beginners and families.
Hot Springs
After any of these activities, Minakami's hot spring waters are therapeutic. The Yubiso and Tsukiyono onsen areas have excellent ryokan and public baths. The sodium chloride springs warm deeply chilled or tired muscles. Mizugami Shrine's foot bath near the river is free and atmospheric.
Getting There
From Tokyo's Ueno station, the Joetsu Shinkansen reaches Jomo-Kogen station in 75 minutes (¥5,590; JR Pass eligible). Shuttle buses and taxis connect Jomo-Kogen to Minakami town (about 15 minutes, ¥600). Most activity operators offer station pickup. Minakami makes an excellent 2-day trip: activities one day, onsen relaxation the next.
