Naha doesn't look or feel like mainland Japan. Palm trees line the streets, the architecture has a Caribbean-Mediterranean quality, and Shuri Castle — the former palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom — reminds you that Okinawa was an independent kingdom until 1879. This is one of Japan's most distinctive cities.

Shuri Castle

Shuri Castle (首里城) was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom for nearly 500 years and is Okinawa's most important historical monument. The vibrant vermilion palace complex, rebuilt after WWII destruction (and currently being restored again following a devastating 2019 fire that destroyed the main hall), demonstrates a distinctive Ryukyuan architectural style that blends Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences. The surrounding walls, gates, and subsidiary buildings survived the fire and remain impressive. Entry ¥820.

Kokusai-dori Street

Kokusai-dori (International Street) runs 1.6 kilometers through central Naha and is Okinawa's main tourist shopping street — souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés in a strip that manages to be both touristy and genuinely lively. Look for Okinawan specialties: Awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit made from indica rice), beni-imo (purple sweet potato) sweets, shisa (lion-dog guardian figures), sanshin music, and Ryukyu glass. The street is pedestrian-friendly and active until late evening.

Makishi Public Market

The Makishi Public Market (牧志公設市場) is Naha's most exhilarating food destination — a two-floor market where the ground floor sells Okinawa's distinctive tropical and subtropical seafood (including brightly colored reef fish, sea grapes, mozuku seaweed) and the upper floor has restaurants that will cook whatever you buy downstairs. Order fish, bring it upstairs, and it's cooked to order while you eat side dishes purchased from market stalls. Price: market price for fish + ¥500–700 cooking fee per person.

Okinawan Food

Naha is the place to try Okinawan cuisine. Champuru (stir-fry with tofu, bittermelon, eggs, and spam) is the signature dish. Rafute (braised pork belly in awamori and soy sauce) is rich and tender. Soki soba (Okinawan noodle soup with braised pork ribs) uses wheat noodles despite the "soba" name. Taco rice (American influence: taco toppings on Japanese rice) is an Okinawan invention. Blue Seal ice cream (American-influenced dairy brand established in 1948) sells Okinawa-specific flavors including shikuwasa citrus and beniimo.

Getting Around

The Okinawa Monorail (Yui Rail) connects Naha Airport to Shuri in 27 minutes (¥370), passing through the city center including Kokusai-dori. It's Okinawa's only rail line — everything else requires buses or rental vehicles. For Naha's main sights, the monorail plus walking is sufficient. For beach areas north of the city, rent a car or motorcycle.
