Naha, Okinawa's capital, is unlike any other Japanese city — shaped by the independent Ryukyu Kingdom's 450-year history, American occupation (1945–1972), and a subtropical climate that produces food, architecture, and culture entirely distinct from the mainland.

Kokusai-dori: The International Street

Kokusai-dori ("International Street") runs 1.6km through central Naha, lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and awamori (Okinawan rice spirit) bars. The street was rebuilt after WWII and named "international" for the postwar mix of American and Japanese influences. The quality of souvenir shopping here is genuinely good: Ryukyuan glassware (handblown with bubbles and irregular shapes), bingata dyeing, and shisa pottery guardians are unique to Okinawa. Don't buy packaged snacks here — prices are 30–50% higher than convenience stores two blocks away.

Shuri Castle

Shuri Castle (¥400) was the center of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the late 14th century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site burned in 1945 and reconstructed in 2019 (the main hall burned again in 2019 and is currently under re-reconstruction — partially viewable). The castle's Chinese-influenced architecture — red walls, intricate woodwork — differs completely from Japanese mainland castles. The surrounding Shuri neighborhood preserves stone-walled lanes (ishidatami) and traditional craft workshops.

Makishi Public Market

The covered market has operated since 1950 and contains Naha's best concentration of Okinawan food culture: vendors selling sea grapes (umi-budo), mozuku seaweed, goya (bitter melon), and the full spectrum of Pacific seafood. Second-floor restaurants accept fish purchased downstairs and cook it for a preparation fee (¥500–800) — this system (sankaku shoku) is uniquely Okinawan. The market's renovation (2023) has modernized the facilities while retaining the essential character.

Okinawan Food Highlights

Goya champuru: Bitter melon stir-fried with tofu, egg, and pork — Okinawa's signature dish and one of the world's great vegetable preparations. Okinawa soba: Thick pork-broth noodles with pork belly, kamaboko fish cake, and pickled ginger — despite the name, made with wheat flour rather than buckwheat. Taco rice: American-Okinawan fusion born near military bases — seasoned taco meat over rice with cheese, lettuce, and salsa. Awamori: Okinawa's indigenous rice spirit, aged in clay pots, with 30–40% alcohol — stronger and earthier than Japanese shochu.

Day Trips from Naha

Cape Manzamo (60 min by bus): Dramatic cliffs over turquoise water. Katsuren Castle ruins (60 min): UNESCO castle ruins on a promontory. Kerama Islands (30–50 min by ferry, ¥1,500–2,700): Japan's best snorkeling and diving, day trip from Naha or overnight stay.
