Tokyo is a year-round destination but distinctly seasonal — each month has its own character, events, and considerations. Here's the honest breakdown.

January–February (Winter)

Weather: 5–12°C, clear and dry. Rarely snows in central Tokyo (1–2 days annually). Crowds: Low after New Year (Jan 4+). Highlights: Clearest Mt. Fuji views of the year. Plum blossoms begin late January/February at Yushima Tenmangu. Prices: Generally lowest accommodation rates. Verdict: Excellent for independent travelers who don't mind cold.

March–April (Spring)

Weather: 10–20°C, occasionally rainy. Crowds: Cherry blossom peak (late March–early April) is extremely crowded. Highlights: Cherry blossoms — Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, Meguro River. Plum blossoms early March. Prices: High during sakura peak, book 3–4 months ahead. Verdict: Most beautiful, most logistically challenging.

May (Late Spring)

Weather: 18–25°C, pleasant. Crowds: Golden Week (April 29–May 5) is peak; then drops sharply. Highlights: Sanja Matsuri (3rd weekend May) — Asakusa's largest festival. Fresh green leaves. Prices: Drop significantly after May 5. Verdict: Mid-to-late May is arguably Tokyo's best month.

June (Rainy Season)

Weather: 20–27°C, frequent rain but not constant. Crowds: Low. Highlights: Hydrangeas at Kamakura (day trip). Quieter museums and restaurants. Prices: Lower. Verdict: Underrated — the rain is intermittent, and the city is genuinely manageable.

July–August (Summer)

Weather: 30–37°C, high humidity. Heat index regularly above 40°C. Crowds: High (Japanese summer holidays from late July). Highlights: Sumida River Fireworks (last Saturday July), Obon festivals mid-August, Tokyo outdoor events. Verdict: Requires heat tolerance. Best for those who want maximum festive energy.

September–October (Early Autumn)

Weather: Drops from 30°C to 22°C through the period. October is outstanding. Crowds: Moderate — lower than spring or November. Highlights: Art seasons begin, Tokyo International Film Festival (October), early foliage in Nikko from mid-October. Verdict: October may be Tokyo's single best month overall.

November (Autumn Peak)

Weather: 12–20°C, clear and cool. Crowds: Moderate in Tokyo (heavier in Kyoto). Highlights: Autumn foliage — Rikugien Garden (lit up, limited entry), Shinjuku Gyoen, Hamarikyu. Prices: Moderate. Verdict: Excellent weather, beautiful foliage without Kyoto-level crowds.

December (Early Winter)

Weather: 8–14°C, mostly clear. Crowds: Moderate, Christmas markets add visitors mid-December. Highlights: Illumination events (Roppongi Hills, Marunouchi, teamLab seasonal shows), Comiket (late December). Verdict: First three weeks are excellent; late December has Christmas/New Year crowds.
