The Imperial Palace sits at the center of Tokyo — the residence of the Emperor surrounded by 3.4 km of moats and walls on the former site of Edo Castle. Most of the inner grounds are closed to ordinary visitors, but the East Gardens, outer moat path, and twice-yearly inner grounds access offer a substantial visit.

Imperial Palace East Gardens (Higashi Gyoen)

The main garden area open to the public — 21 hectares on the former inner bailey of Edo Castle. Features: stone walls and towers from the original Edo Castle (1600s), Japanese garden, seasonal flowers (iris in June, autumn leaves in November), and the foundation of the original castle's main keep. Free admission. Open 9:00–16:30 (17:00 in summer). Closed Mondays and Fridays. Enter at Ōtemachi, Kitahanebashi, or Hirakawamon gates.

The Palace Outer Moat Run

The 5 km loop around the outer moat (kokyo gaien) is one of Tokyo's most popular morning runs — thousands of businesspeople and tourists run it daily. The view of the double bridge (Nijūbashi) and moat at dawn is beautiful and uncrowded before 7 AM. Walking the full circuit takes 60–90 minutes at a casual pace. Access to the green lawn areas (kokyo gaien) is free and always open.

Nijūbashi Bridge

The Double Bridge — two bridges reflected in the moat creating a double image — is the iconic Tokyo Imperial Palace photograph. Visible from the southern edge of the outer gardens, facing toward the main gate. The formal palace gates can be seen behind it. Free to view from the public path.

Inner Grounds Tours (January 2 & December 23)

The Emperor's inner grounds open to the public only on January 2 (New Year celebration) and December 23 (Emperor's Birthday). Hundreds of thousands visit on January 2 — the Imperial Family appears on the balcony. Advance registration now required for December 23; January 2 is open access. Check the Imperial Household Agency website for current procedures.

Guided Palace Tours

The Imperial Household Agency offers free guided tours of inner grounds sections (not the main residence) by advance reservation online. Tours last about 75 minutes and cover the Fujimi-yagura turret and Fushimi-yagura. English-language audio guides available. Apply via kunaicho.go.jp at least 1 month ahead; limited spots.
