The Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka triangle is Japan's classic tourist route — three cities that together cover modern Japan, historical Japan, and culinary Japan in a logical geographic progression. This itinerary explains how to structure the route depending on how much time you have.
Why This Order
Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka is the most logical direction because: (1) most international flights arrive at Tokyo (Narita/Haneda), (2) the shinkansen runs west in this direction, (3) Kansai International Airport serves Osaka for departure, creating a clean linear route without backtracking. The reverse (Osaka → Kyoto → Tokyo) works equally well if flying into KIX.
How Many Days Per City
One week total: Tokyo 3 nights, Kyoto 2 nights, Osaka 1 night. Rushed but covers the essentials.
10 days total: Tokyo 4 nights, Kyoto 3 nights, Osaka 2 nights. Comfortable without feeling rushed.
Two weeks total: Tokyo 4–5 nights, Kyoto 4 nights, Osaka 2–3 nights + day trips. Ideal for a first trip.
Tokyo Highlights (Days 1–4)
Day 1: Asakusa and Ueno — traditional Tokyo at its most concentrated.
Day 2: Harajuku, Omotesando, Shibuya — modern Tokyo, fashion, and the scramble crossing.
Day 3: Shinjuku (Golden Gai, Memory Lane, TMG free observatory) and Meiji Shrine.
Day 4 (optional): Teamlab Planets, Tsukiji morning market, or a day trip (Nikko, Kamakura).
Shinkansen to Kyoto
Tokyo Station or Shinagawa → Kyoto Station: 2h 15m by Hikari shinkansen (¥13,850 without JR Pass). Morning departure allows a full afternoon in Kyoto. Reserve seats; right side of the train for Mount Fuji views about 40 minutes after Shin-Yokohama.
Kyoto Highlights (Days 5–7)
Day 5: Fushimi Inari (early morning) → Gion evening walk.
Day 6: Arashiyama (bamboo, Tenryu-ji) → Kinkaku-ji → Ryoan-ji.
Day 7: Philosopher's Walk → Ginkaku-ji, or day trip to Nara (35 minutes by Kintetsu).
Osaka (Days 8–10)
30 minutes by JR from Kyoto to Osaka. Namba area for accommodation — best positioned for Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, and nightlife.
Day 8: Osaka Castle, Umeda, Dotonbori food tour.
Day 9: Shinsekai and Kuromon Market, or day trip back to Kyoto for any missed temples.
Day 10: Osaka shopping, then departure from Kansai Airport (KIX) by Nankai Railway (37 minutes from Namba, ¥930).
