Tokyo is a water city — built at the confluence of multiple rivers, with an extensive bay, canals, and historic waterways that were the arteries of Edo commerce. Exploring by water provides views of the city unavailable from street level and connects districts in a different way than the subway grid. The water bus (suijo bus) network operated by Tokyo Cruise Ship Co. is affordable, functional, and underused by visitors.

Sumida River Line (Asakusa to Odaiba)

The most scenic route: from Azumabashi dock in Asakusa south to Hinode Pier (near Hamamatsucho) and optionally continuing to Odaiba. The journey passes under 12 bridges, including several historic ones, with views of the Sumida River banks, Tsukuda Island, and the Rainbow Bridge as you approach the bay. Duration: approximately 40 minutes to Hinode, another 20 minutes to Odaiba. Price: ¥780 Asakusa to Hinode, ¥1,560 Asakusa to Odaiba. Covered by IC card.

The boats themselves are designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa (Hotaluna) and Leiji Matsumoto (Himiko) — dramatic vessels worth seeing from the dock even if you don't board.

Odaiba to Hinode Ferry

The sea bus connects Odaiba directly to Hinode Pier on the mainland — an alternative to the Yurikamome monorail for reaching/leaving Odaiba. Views of Rainbow Bridge from water level and the Tokyo skyline from the bay are excellent. Price: ¥480. Departs approximately every 30 minutes.

Tokyo Bay Cruise

Several cruise operators run evening bay cruises from Hinode Pier — dinner cruises, illumination cruises, and simple sightseeing tours. The evening skyline view from Tokyo Bay (Rainbow Bridge, the towers of Odaiba, the bay illuminated) is exceptional. Prices range from ¥2,500 for a simple 45-minute cruise to ¥8,000+ for a dinner cruise. Book through Tokyo Cruise or Yakatabune operators.

Canal Cruises

Tokyo's historic downtown (shitamachi) area around Nihonbashi and Sumida has a network of canals from the Edo period. Canal boat tours operate from several docks in central Tokyo — Nihonbashi cruise, Koto-ku canal tour, and Fukagawa waterway tours. These are more historical and quieter than the main river routes; excellent for visitors interested in how Edo-era Tokyo functioned as a canal city. Most run ¥1,200–¥2,000 for 45–60 minutes.

Practical Notes

Water bus timetables are seasonal and limited in frequency — check schedules in advance at Tokyo Cruise (suijobus.co.jp). IC cards work for payment on most routes. Weather affects operations — strong wind or rain may cause cancellations. The Sumida River route is most atmospheric in cherry blossom season (late March–early April) when the river banks bloom; extremely popular at this time and often sold out on peak days.
