Three weeks transforms a Japan trip from a highlights tour into a genuine immersion. With 21 days, you can follow the main circuit while detours into Kyushu, the Alps, or rural Japan reveal the country at a different pace.
Days 1–4: Tokyo
Four full days covers Tokyo properly. Day 1: East — Asakusa, Skytree, Ueno. Day 2: West — Meiji Jingu, Harajuku, Shibuya. Day 3: Day trip to Kamakura (Great Buddha, temple hiking). Day 4: Deep Shinjuku — Gyoen garden, Golden Gai, evening Memory Lane.
Days 5–6: Japanese Alps (Matsumoto + Kamikochi)
JR Azusa from Shinjuku to Matsumoto (2.5h, ¥6,620). Day 5: Matsumoto Castle, Nawate-dori, exceptional soba dinner. Day 6: Early bus to Kamikochi (open May–November) — hike the Kappa-bashi to Tashiro Pond circuit (3h), see the Northern Alps backdrop. Return to Matsumoto, evening train to Nagano.
Days 7–8: Nagano (Snow Monkeys + Zenko-ji)
Day 7: Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park (best Dec–Mar for bathing monkeys), Yudanaka Onsen soak. Day 8: Zenko-ji temple's early morning ceremony (6am), then Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa (75 min, ¥4,690).
Days 9–10: Kanazawa
Day 9: Kenroku-en garden, Kanazawa Castle, Higashi Chaya geisha district. Day 10: 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Nagamachi samurai district, Omicho Market kaisendon lunch. Train to Kyoto (2.5h by Thunderbird, ¥7,340).
Days 11–13: Kyoto
Day 11: Eastern Kyoto — Fushimi Inari (early), Kiyomizudera, Gion evening. Day 12: Northern Kyoto — Kinkakuji, Ryoanji, Arashiyama. Day 13: Uji (matcha + Byodoin Phoenix Hall), Philosopher's Path, Nanzenji.
Day 14: Hiroshima + Miyajima
Shinkansen to Hiroshima (2h). Peace Memorial Museum (2.5h). Afternoon ferry to Miyajima — Itsukushima Shrine torii, grilled oysters, Mt. Misen ropeway. Overnight Hiroshima.
Days 15–17: Kyushu — Fukuoka + Beppu
Day 15: Shinkansen to Fukuoka (55 min from Hiroshima). Hakata ramen, Nakasu yatai evening stalls. Day 16: Express train to Beppu (2h) — the Jigoku hells tour, evening soak at Takegawa-ra sand bath. Day 17: Limited express to Yufuin — peaceful mountain ryokan town, Lake Kinrin, craft shops. Return to Osaka via Shinkansen connection (4h total).
Days 18–19: Osaka
Day 18: Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, Dotonbori. Day 19: Kobe day trip — beef, Nada sake breweries, Mt. Rokko ropeway.
Days 20–21: Flexible + Departure
Day 20: Return to favorite city or add Nara, Himeji, or Kinosaki Onsen. Day 21: Departure from Kansai Airport or Osaka. This itinerary covers approximately ¥40,000–50,000 in intercity JR fares — a 21-day JR Pass (¥100,000) is not economical; buy individual tickets.
