June's rainy season (tsuyu) gives it a reputation that keeps many visitors away — which, paradoxically, makes it one of Japan's more rewarding travel months. Here's the honest case for June.

The Rainy Season Reality

Tsuyu doesn't mean constant rain. It means elevated humidity and more frequent overcast days with occasional heavy rain, interspersed with clear sunny periods. A typical June day in Tokyo has a 40–50% chance of some rain — not the continuous downpour the name suggests. Mornings are often clear; afternoon showers are more common. A good compact umbrella (¥700–1,500 at any convenience store) and a light waterproof layer handle 95% of June rain situations.

Hydrangea (Ajisai) Season

June is Japan's hydrangea season — and the blue, purple, and white flower masses at major gardens are one of the country's most underappreciated floral displays. Hase-dera Temple (Kamakura): Dedicated hydrangea path with ocean views below — so popular it requires reservation during the ajisai season. Meigetsuin Temple (Kamakura): "The hydrangea temple" — 2,500 plants covering the hillside around a Zen garden. Hakone Tozan Railway: The mountain railway passes through hydrangea-lined cuttings in late June — the illuminated evening service (hydrangea illumination, late June) is extraordinary. Nezu Shrine (Tokyo): The tunnel of red torii has a hydrangea garden at its base.

Crowd and Price Benefits

June is Japan's least popular international travel month — hotels price below spring and autumn rates, popular ryokan have availability that books out months in advance in October, and major tourist sites operate at comfortable density. The Kyoto temples that require 8am arrivals in November to beat crowds can be visited at 10am in June without significant queuing.

What to Expect Weather-Wise

Tokyo: Average high 25°C, average low 18°C, high humidity. Kyoto: Slightly warmer — 28°C average high with higher humidity than Tokyo. The air becomes noticeably heavy by late June. Hokkaido: Rainy season doesn't reach Hokkaido until late June or July — the island has Japan's best June weather (20–22°C, blue skies, full lavender fields by late June). If June weather is a concern, Hokkaido is the solution.

June Events

Sanno Matsuri (Tokyo, mid-June odd years): The Hie Shrine's major festival — portable shrine procession through central Tokyo's business districts. Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto, May 15 — technically May but preparations visible in June). Summer solstice: Long daylight hours (Tokyo: sunrise 4:26am, sunset 7pm in late June) provide extended photography light for those willing to rise early.
