Three days in Osaka gives you enough time to explore the city's main neighborhoods, eat your way through its famous food culture, and take a day trip to a nearby destination. Osaka is Japan's most food-obsessed city — kuidaore ("eating until you drop") is the local motto — and three days is the right amount of time to take that seriously.
Day 1: Namba, Dotonbori, and Shinsekai
Morning (9–11am): Kuromon Ichiba Market for breakfast — grilled scallops, fresh sea urchin, and a tamago roll. The market is liveliest before noon.
Late morning (11am–1pm): Shinsaibashi shopping street and the surrounding Amerika-mura area. Browse the covered arcade and the vintage clothing shops on the side streets.
Lunch: Okonomiyaki at Mizuno on Dotonbori (¥1,500–¥2,000) or takoyaki at any of the dozen stalls with the giant octopus signs.
Afternoon (2–5pm): Walk Dotonbori at leisure — photograph the Glico running man, Kani Doraku crab, and the canal. South into Hozenji Yokocho alley for the moss-covered Fudo statue.
Evening: Shinsekai for dinner — kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) at a counter establishment, then Tsutenkaku Tower illuminated at night. Budget ¥2,000–¥3,000 for kushikatsu and drinks.
Day 2: Osaka Castle and Umeda
Morning (9–11am): Osaka Castle Park — the castle grounds are open early. The castle interior museum (¥600) covers the Toyotomi era and the dramatic end of the Osaka Campaigns in 1615. The surrounding park has excellent cherry blossoms in April.
Late morning/Lunch: Take the subway north to Umeda (10 minutes). Lunch in the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai alley — a 1940s-era restaurant lane with cheap, traditional Osaka food. Try negiyaki (green onion pancakes).
Afternoon (1–5pm): Umeda Sky Building for the circular observation deck and the underground Takimi-koji retro food alley. The views from Umeda Sky's open-air observatory are some of the best in Osaka.
Evening: Return to Namba for a proper izakaya dinner — order edamame, karaage, yakitori, and a few rounds of beer or highball. Budget ¥3,000–¥4,000 per person.
Day 3: Nara Day Trip
Morning (9am–1pm): Kintetsu train to Nara (33 minutes, ¥700). Nara deer park, Todai-ji Great Buddha, Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The deer are most active in the morning.
Lunch in Nara: Try kaki no ha zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaf — a Nara specialty) from one of the shops near the main street.
Return to Osaka by 3pm for free afternoon exploring Osaka's less-visited neighborhoods: Nakatsu, Tanimachi, or the canal area around Namba Parks.
Farewell dinner: Osaka's finest tonkatsu or a proper kappo kaiseki restaurant for a memorable final meal. Budget ¥4,000–¥8,000 per person.
Alternative Day 3: Kobe
Replace the Nara day trip with Kobe (25 minutes by JR): Kitano foreign settlement district, Nankinmachi Chinatown lunch, and Kobe beef for dinner at a specialist Teppanyaki restaurant. Budget ¥8,000–¥15,000 for a proper Kobe beef set. Worth doing once if the budget allows.
