Sapporo is Japan's fifth-largest city and Hokkaido's capital — a planned city built from scratch in the 1870s on a grid system that makes it unusually easy to navigate. Its food scene is extraordinary, its beer world-famous, and its setting — surrounded by mountains, close to powder skiing and pristine national parks — makes it a natural base for Hokkaido exploration.

Sapporo Ramen

Sapporo invented miso ramen. The thick, rich miso-based broth (versus Tokyo's light shoyu) came from necessity — Hokkaido winters demand more caloric warmth. The classic Sapporo bowl features miso broth, curly egg noodles, corn, butter, bean sprouts, and bamboo shoots. Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley, Susukino) concentrates 17 ramen specialists in one covered alley, operating from 11am–3am. Menya Saimi and Sumire consistently rank highest on Tabelog for the authentic version. Budget ¥900–1,200 per bowl.

Sapporo Beer

Sapporo Brewery, founded 1876, is Japan's oldest beer brand. The Sapporo Beer Museum (free, tours ¥500) in the brick brewery building explains the history of Japanese beer while providing excellent context for the tasting room afterward. The adjacent Sapporo Beer Garden serves all-you-can-eat Hokkaido lamb (jingisukan BBQ) with unlimited beer (¥4,400, 100 minutes) — one of Japan's best food-and-drink experiences. The Kirin and Sapporo brewery tours are among Japan's most accessible industrial tourism options.

Food Beyond Ramen

Hokkaido produces Japan's finest dairy products, seafood, and agricultural goods — all available in Sapporo's markets and restaurants. Nijo Market (5 min from Odori): Fresh sea urchin (uni), ikura, crab, and seasonal fish at market prices. Open from 7am. Kaisendon (seafood rice bowls) from ¥1,500–4,500. Hokkaido dairy: Fresh milk, butter, and soft-serve ice cream are noticeably superior to mainland Japan equivalents. The Milkissimo soft-serve near Nijo Market is the city's most popular dairy stop (¥350–500 per cone). Soup curry: Sapporo's own innovation (see our separate guide) — thin aromatic broth with whole vegetables and protein. Garaku and Suage are the most acclaimed shops.

Odori Park and Susukino

Odori Park — a 1.5km east-west boulevard of gardens and fountains in the city center — hosts the Sapporo Snow Festival (February), Autumn Fest (October), and White Illumination (November). The Sapporo TV Tower (¥800 observation deck) at the park's eastern end provides city views. Susukino, immediately south, is Hokkaido's largest entertainment district — izakaya, bars, clubs, and late-night ramen in concentrated, manageable blocks.

Day Trips from Sapporo

Niseko (2 hours by bus): World-class powder skiing December–March. Otaru (30 min by JR, ¥640): Canal-side warehouse district and sushi town — Otaru's sushi bars are considered among Hokkaido's finest. Noboribetsu Onsen (80 min by express bus): Dramatic volcanic hot spring resort with the Jigokudani (Hell Valley) steam vent landscape. Furano and Biei (2 hours by JR): Lavender fields (July) and the Patchwork Hill landscape — the most pastoral Hokkaido scenery accessible without a rental car.
